VKOT Wins Youth Group of the Year in The State of Texas

Updated: Jul 31, 2022

In July of 2022, VKOT attended the 2022 Say What! Tobacco-Free Conference where they were awarded the #1 position for their work. Throughout the 2021-2022 school year, VKOT completed a total of 50 projects reaching thousands of people. VKOT previously won this award in both 2018 and 2019.

"Youth Group of the Year" Award

This award was especially deserved given that VKOT had to restart with only 1 member due to the pandemic. With only 16 members by the end of the year, they managed to not only beat every other tobacco prevention group in the state of Texas, but also managed to beat their own record of projects. VKOT usually has around 40 members and completed between 30 and 40 projects. The students in this organization truly stepped up to the plate this year to show their community that they would be coming back with a vengeance and that Tobacco would not win.

Four of our members presented at this conference as well. VKOT has extensive experience with fundraising, so when asked if they wanted to present at this years conference, the choice was obvious. These members presented their work over the course of four hours to educate other youth groups and their sponsors on the various tips and tricks they had learned over the years on fundraising.

Incoming President Adrienne Keim, Outgoing President Walker Satterfield, Incoming Vice President Lacey Garcia, and Incoming Secretary Gracie Mireles did not disappoint with their presentation. Their hard work was met with praise from other youth and adults alike.

The Eagle wrote an article about their work. Read it here.
